About Us
Middle Way Farm is a Certified Naturally Grown market garden located just north of Grinnell on land leased from the Lacina family. Run by Jordan Scheibel since 2013, Middle Way Farm has produced a wide range of annual vegetables and some perennials over its years of production on over 2 acres at its maximum extent. From 2013 - 2022, Middle Way Farm produced a weekly seasonal Community Supported Agriculture share for members in Grinnell and Newton and occasionally farther afield. From 2013 - 2019, we attended the Thursday Grinnell Farmers Market before moving to an online store and home delivery during the COVID pandemic. Since 2023, Jordan has been running Middle Way Farm on a part time basis with a smaller land base and a smaller range of crops available. Our current mix of products / enterprises includes: annual spring plant sales April - June, asparagus and limited spring produce May - June, garlic July - December, carrots July - March, cherry tomatoes August - October, sweet red peppers August - October, and winter spinach November - March
Practices
Our use of organic practices and emphasis on soil and ecological health results in superior quality and better tasting produce.
As a Certified Naturally Grown farm we conform to a set of organic standards similar to those followed by Certified Organic farms including:
- No use of synthetic herbicides, fertilizers, pesticides, or fungicides. Use of organically approved soil amendments, potting soils, and biological pesticides and fungicide that breakdown quickly and limit damage to non-target beneficial insects.
- Purchased plant stock, potatoes, sweet potato slips, etc. must be certified organic, certified naturally grown, or chemical-free.
- No fungicide treated or GMO seeds may be used. If conventionally produced seed is used, must be justified by being unavailable organically produced.
- Emphasis on soil and plant health and preventing proliferation of diseases, pests, and weeds through crop rotation, cover crops, mineral amendments, limited use of tillage, and compost.
- Promotion of ecological health and biological diversity of beneficial insect predators, pollinators, amphibians, birds, etc. through use of companion planting / intercropping beneficial plants and flowers, native plantings including shrub hedgerows and prairie, use of cover crops and in field beneficial plantings.
- Annual inspection and re-certification
